Ahtanum
Basics
120,477 total acres, of which 89,217 are forested. Moderate to low risk of uncharacteristically large fires in most locations. DNR trustlands and Yakama Nation land occupy 86% of this landscape. Private land with homes covers a small portion in several canyons in the eastern portion. DNR's landscape evaluation identified 19,000-29,000 acres are recommended to be treated to move the landscape into a more resilient condition. This includes shifting an estimated 13,000– 16,700 acres from dense to open forest, while maintaining 28-40% of the overall landscape in dense forest to provide for habitat, wood production, and carbon storage. Maintenance treatments in existing open forest are needed on an estimated 4,000-8,000 acres.
As of October 31, 2023, since 2017 in this priority landscape:
- Individuals and organizations have reported 3,948 acres of forest health treatments completed impacting 3,761 footprint acres.
- No acres have experienced low or mixed severity in the priority landscape, while 12,494 acres of Forest Practice Applications have been approved for some kind of active management.
